The story behind Epic Fail…

It all started 8 years ago when a desire to create a preteen video series was planted in my heart. About that time others were just starting to create video series for kids’ ministry. I liked what I saw, but there were a few problems with the new trend. First, there were few video series that addressed the specific issues preteens were facing. Second, the videos were too young for preteens. Puppets, goofy characters dressed in a Bible costume and other similar elements disengaged preteens. Third, the video content replaced the teacher, which created a disconnect between the leader and students.

I imagined a day when someone would create a video series specifically targeting preteens – with topics that addresses preteen issues, production content cool enough to grab their attention and video segments that enhanced, not replaced, the teacher. I had a strong feeling that I would somehow facilitate such a series, but at the time had no idea how.

Three and half years ago PreteenMinistry.net was launched. With $700 put on a credit card, the website went live and we started creating resources for preteen leaders. About a year into it, we started creating preteen series. From day one, I wanted to do a video series but quickly found out that it was way out of our budget to even consider the possibility. Then, preteenministry.net took off and we grew to the point that a video series could be funded.

In December of 2011, Epic Fail was written by one of the best curriculum writers in the country – Sean Sweet. Sean is a preteen pastor in Rocklin, CA, and he had written the series for Elevate, the preteen ministry he leads. The series was well received by the Elevate students. The series had resulted in them overcoming failure in their lives. I was really excited that Sean was willing to share with other leaders and write the video content as well. Sean happened to know a guy, Chris Santos of Santos Production who could do the videos within budget. The day I met Chris, we both hit it off. I shared with him the vision behind the series and felt we would do great working together. And we did!

Producing video content is much more time consuming that a regular series, so it took us a few months to put everything together. But it’s finally done! Really excited! A big thanks to our team: Sean Sweet (writer), Santos Production (video), Creative Juice (graphic designer) and Tom Helm (editor). Without them, Epic Fail would not even exist!

It is our team’s hopes and prayers that Epic Fail would be used in a powerful way to reach preteens around the world!!!! We feel strongly that it will and our team will be keeping you all in our prayers.
