Tuesday I asked you the question, “Want Preteens to Never Miss Church Again?“. I answered that question by talking about how to unlock the power of a “group identity” in your preteen ministry.

Here are two examples of how I am currently doing that in Pursuit, the preteen ministry I lead. You’ll find it helpful in your preteen ministry. Watch the video now.

Some of you commented on how you unlock the power of a “group identity” in your preteen ministry. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve posted those examples below:

Andrew:

“I think having an environment set up specifically for preteens plays a part of promoting a group identity. We’ve recently set up a room at our church specifically for our preteens(5th-6th) that includes couches, board games, video games, and some pretty sweet paint. We wanted to give them a place on Wednesday nights to hang out with each other and the leaders, to have fun, and form relationships. When we introduced them to the room(which they loved…think home makeover show reactions) we told them that it was their room and it was designed with them in mind. I think that really heightened their sense of belonging and importance while adding to that feeling of a group identity.”

SunSchSuper:

“We don’t have room for a separate room so we try to create a group identity by giving them collectibles like special pencils, scripture dog tags or wristbands. Also they have their own night during the week for fellowship.

Ani:

“We have even given our group a name and created a logo for it as well. Additionally we have planned events specifically for our preteens hosted by a different family each month. I have found that these kids love being able to feel like a vital part of our church family also, so we have found ways in which they are a valued part our Sunday morning services.”

Thanks for sharing everyone!

When we first started The Ascent I gave the kids free reign on the name, color scheme, decor, curriculum and some of our first events. It took 3 weeks to hear all of what they had in mind. Did I do all of what they had in mind? Of course not. If I did, we would have a hot pink walls, pizza every night, games and no lesson (might not be too bad).

But seriously, hearing them out began the process of identity for them. They were the creators! Over time, we used small groups (boys/girls) and a couple events to help bring them together. Totally worked! But one of the coolest things that brought them together was having them sit down to plan out 3 months worth of Servant days together and then they went out to do each service opportunity! So cool to see each student use their gifts and talents with each other in service!

All in all, hearing student ideas, events and service projects are the ways that I bring students together. A good old lock-in. You really get to know someone when you sleep in the same room as them!

Nick…good stuff. Yep, they have to “own it” and they really do when they are given the opportunity.
