iPray Preteen Curriculum

iPray: 6 Week Preteen Series on Prayer

Use this series to help your preteen youth group discover how prayer changes everything.

Often, preteens misunderstand prayer.

They think it is something they “have to do” rather than something they “get to do”. They confuse it as being a chore rather than a privilege.

Some go through the motions of prayer without fully engaging with God. They miss the truth that prayer is a big part of a personal relationship with God. Prayer is something we do to talk to and listen to Him. We grow closer to God the more we pray.

In the iPray series, preteens will discover one of the BIG reason we pray – to deepen our relationship with a loving God who wants us to know Him deeply.

Students will also learn that prayer…

  • Takes away worry with His peace.
  • Offers us a fresh start when we mess up.
  • Creates the environment for God to speak to us.
  • Makes a big difference in the lives of others.

Overview

Week 1: What Is Prayer?
Bible: Psalm 62:8; Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35; Matthew 26:36; Luke 23:33-34; Matthew 6:9-13; 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Bottom Line: Prayer is a conversation with God that can happen anytime, anywhere—and that’s a great reason to keep praying, always.
What’s That to Me? God loves and cares for us deeply, and he wants to have an ongoing, personal relationship with us. Prayer is one of the biggest pieces of that relationship, and it’s as easy as having a conversation with a good friend.

Week 2: Discover God
Bible: Revelation 1:8; Exodus 15:26; Jonah 1-2:1,10; Jonah 2:1-9; Isaiah 46:9
Bottom Line: Prayer reminds us who God is, and that’s another great reason to pray.
What’s That to Me? God can seem mysterious and distant. When we pray, God shows himself to us and reminds us who he is. There’s no better way to get to know God more than to pray often.

Week 3: No Worries
Bible Passages: Philippians 4:6-7; Esther 4:15-16; 1 Peter 5:7
Bottom Line: Praying takes care of our anxious thoughts, and that’s another great reason to pray!
What’s That to Me? We can take our biggest worries and problems to God, tell him our needs, and know that He’ll help us. Praying to God about our anxieties will give us a sense of peace, even when things around us are difficult.

Week 4: Restart
Bible Passages: Psalm 51:1-11; 1 John 1:9; Hebrews 12:1; Psalm 103:12; Psalm 139:23-24
Bottom Line: Praying gives us the chance for a fresh start.
What’s That to Me? No matter what we’ve done or who we are, we all get off track and sin. God will always forgive us and erase our sins—all we have to do is ask him in prayer.

Week 5: Listen Up
Bible Passages: 1 Samuel 3:1-11; John 10:27
Bottom Line: Praying gives us the opportunity to hear God’s voice.
What’s That to Me? It’s easy to overlook that an important part of prayer is learning to listen for God. God responds to us, and it takes practice—and quiet—to hear what He’s saying.

Week 6: Pray For One Another
Bible Passages: James 5:16; Exodus 32; 1 Timothy 2:1; Acts 12:3-19
Bottom Line: Praying for others makes a difference.
What’s That to Me? Sometimes, the most important thing we can do for others in need is pray. Praying for others makes a real difference in their lives.
