Last year around this time, I wrote about how January is a turning point in preteen ministry.  Read part 1 and part 2 of those blogs.

For those who would prefer the cliff note version, here you go.  I’ve noticed over the years that the group dynamics of a preteen ministry change right about now, in January.  Developmentally, preteens are a bit more mature and the group seems to be more relationally connected.  Therefore, they’re more open to going deeper with God and now is a good time give them opportunities to do so.

Below are some ideas that have worked for me in the past:

1. Launch a preteen Alpha.
Alpha is an opportunity to explore what it means to be a follower of Jesus in a fun and safe way. It’s basically a 10 week introduction to Christianity.  Great for newcomers.  I’ve used the youth version and did some editing to make it compatible with preteens.  Learn more about Alpha here.

2. Offer a Discipleship Class
Give preteens who want to go deeper with God an opportunity to sign up for a discipleship class. I’ve had the most success with a sign-up so that you get only the preteens who really want to be there.  Go through a book of the Bible together (or an overview of a book).  The book of James and Proverbs are a sure fire hit with preteens. Assign reading during the week and discuss what was read during the meeting time. Quick and simple.  Add some snacks, a fun game, relational time in the beginning and prayer at the end.  Mix all that together and you have enough stuff to do for 1 – 1 1/2 hours.

3. Host a Worship Night
If your preteen group has a band, then host a worship night.  Eat some pizza beforehand and then do about 30 minutes or so of some rockin’ worship followed by a few slow songs.  Be open to a prayer time at the end if preteens are up for that.  Or you can explore other forms of worship.  Maybe set up worship elements in your preteen room.  Hands on, reflective experiences that preteens can interact with and experience God through. It could also include forms of art that are an expression of worship. I’ve never actually done this, but have heard from others who have.  Have you?  If so, leave a comment and give us some ideas.  However, I have done the worship night with a live band many times before.  Always a huge success.

4.  Winter Camp
My new favorite! Like it even better than a summer camp.  We’ll be taking our preteens to Forest Home at the end of January. Excited!  Bring your preteens to a winter camp near you or host your own.  If you haven’t planned yours yet, probably too late.  Food for thought for next year though!  Going to winter camp?  Where?  What do you like most about taking preteens to winter camp?  Leave a comment.  Love to hear your story!

Winter Camp!!! Agree that it is a great thing. We go up to Northern Arizona for three nights and pray for snow. It does not always happen. So far we have only gone to a programed camp there but I feel like it is a little young for our group so possible looking into next year doing our own thing but it’s a lot of work so IDK.
