January marks a turning point for preteens.  4th graders finally start to somewhat calm down and show maturity.  5th graders are becoming leaders.  6th Graders begin to look and act like middle schoolers.  No matter how you divide preteens, group dynamics begin to change around now.  What changes occur and what do you do about it?

A couple of things pop in my head.

First, community is intensified.  It takes a couple of months to create it.  If you’ve been intentional, now is the time the group begins to really mesh together.  Great time to do a Winter Camp!  We’re bringing our preteens in February.  But maybe that is not your thing for whatever reason.  No biggie, just an idea.  Look for opportunities to grow preteens’ spiritual life in the context of community.  Whatever that looks like for you, go for it.  It might require you to think outside the box and do something new.

Second, challenge preteens in their relationship with God.  As community increases, so does their spiritual appetite.  Challenge them to go deeper with God.  They’re ready for it.

I have more thoughts on this, but am pretty tired.  Had a long week and it is getting past my bedtime.  My brain doesn’t work after 10pm.  I know, I’m getting old.  Anyway, come back and check my blog over the weekend.  Should have time to finish my thoughts by then.  Good night!
