Shaving Cream & Cereal Face is by far one of my favorite preteen ministry games. It’s one I’ve played over and over again with different preteen groups at different churches, and it is ALWAYS a big hit! The game is messy, crazy and fun…all the needed ingredients to be a HIT with preteens.

The game is totally flexible to any setting. You can play it with a SMALL or LARGE group where everyone participates, or as an upfront game where only a few participate.

I’m honestly not sure where I got the game from, but I think it was the Ultimate Book of Preteen Games by Group Publishing.

Ready to play? Here’s how to play…

Shaving Cream & Cereal Face

Supplies:

  • Shaving creme
  • Fruit Loops cereal
  • Cups
  • Goggles
  • Masking tape

Beforehand, mark two lines with masking tape across the room. The lines should be about 6 feet apart from each other.

How to play: Break preteens into groups of 6. Have a leader spread shaving cream all over one player’s face in each group. It’s a good idea to put goggles on the player, so the shaving cream doesn’t get in the player’s eyes. Shaving creme players stand behind one of the masking tape lines facing their teammates, who are in a single file line behind the other masking tape line. Shaving cream players must keep their hands behind their backs throughout the game. Give the first player in each line a cup of Fruit Loops. When you say “GO”, the player in the front of each line has 30 seconds to throw Fruit Loops one at a time at the face of their teammate with shaving cream on their face. The goal is to get the Fruit Loops to stick. After 30 seconds yell, “SWITCH”. Players at the front of the line pass the cup of Fruit Loops to the second player. The front player then runs to the back of the line, and the second player goes to the front. That player then has 30 seconds to throw & stick Fruit Loops on shaving cream player’s face. Continue this process until every player has had a chance to throw Fruit Loops. The team whose player has the most Fruit Loops to stick on their face wins.

Variations:

  • Play with only 2 players per team if doing as an upfront game.
  • Use mini-marshmallows instead of Fruit Loops.
  • Use ping-pong balls instead of Fruit Loops

Tips:

  • After the game, have a leader with a broom sweep up the Fruit Loops on the ground.
  • Designate one guy and girl leader to take shaving cream volunteers into the bathroom to clean off their faces.
  • Take pictures of shaving cream players to later share with the group.
  • Play upbeat background music during the game.

Pam Zimmerman’s preteen ministry, Linked 56, used ping-pong balls with eye balls painted on them when doing this game. Pam, great idea! This is a pic of one of her preteens:

Instead of shaving cream, use Cool-Whip so it won’t be a problem if they get it in their mouth.

Great idea! The only problem with cool whip is that it doesn’t stick to the face as good as shaving cream. But then again, it taste soooo much better 🙂

We tried this game with Cool-Whip and the spray can Whipped Cream and it didn’t work well. The body heat would cause the cream to melt slightly and would fall off their faces. It was a huge mess!

Yeah, that’s been my experience with whip cream. Shaving cream sticks much better 🙂

I use edible cream that comes in a can and comes our like shaving cream. It works ok unless it’s a really hot day. Maybe cream in Australia is a bit different from cool whip?

Form a circle of chairs that is one chair fewer than a total number of players. Nominate a player to be ‘in’, that player stands in the centre of the circle. Divide all players into three groups of fruit by going around the circle and naming them either apple, orange or pear. The player who is ‘in’, calls the name of a fruit. If he calls out apples, everyone who is that fruit must get up quickly and change places. Players who are not apples remain seated. The person who is ‘in’ tries to sit in an empty spot whenever players swap positions. If they manage to sit in a chair, the player not sitting in a chair is then ‘in’. The person in the middle can also call ‘fruit salad’ and everyone who is seated has to change spots. The game can finish whenever you like.

When you select Create a Game you are taken to a screen that looks similar to the picture on the right. From here you can choose the number of different colored keys you will have to collect (more keys typically means longer games), the number of players, and the game board. You also have the option to invite someone into your game. This process is explained below.Once you are done making your selections, click Done.

Instructions: Give the children some fruit loops and have each child sort their fruit loops according to the color. It helps to give the child some fruit loops to eat until all of the children are finished.
