Use this fun game, Saran Wrap Challenge, in your preteen ministry to setup a lesson on how God’s Word is like a valuable treasure.

God’s Word is powerful!

Help your preteens discover how God’s Word revives our soul, makes us wise, gives us joy, opens our eyes, and so much more.

The game can plug right into a lesson you already have on the topic, or you can use the quick devotional based on Psalm 19:7-11 that’s included here.

Enjoy!

Preteen Game on God’s Word

GAME: Saran Wrap Challenge

SUPPLIES

20-25 notecards

Fun-sized candy bars

Saran Wrap

Dice

GAME PREP

Before the activity, write point values on 20-25 notecards.

These notecards can be used by themselves or wrapped around fun-size candy bars.

Next, layer the notecards/candy in Saran Wrap by placing one in the center and then another after every 5-10 layers.

Start with higher point values in the center and then go lower as you get to the outer edges.

Have preteens sit in a circle alternating by boys and and girls.

Choose a preteen to start unwrapping and hand them the ball.

The person to their left should be of the opposite gender and have 2 dice.

While the first preteen is unwrapping, the preteen to their left is trying to roll doubles with the dice.

Once doubles are rolled, the dice and the Saran Wrap ball must be passed to the left.

Any cards/candy that are uncovered by a preteen can be kept and those points will be awarded to their gender’s team.

You may choose to make several Saran Wrap balls to play multiple rounds.

*If rolling doubles is difficult, choose something easier like rolling an even or odd number. This will create more passing and much more chaos!

Before the game, say: Today, we’re going to play a game called the Saran Wrap Challenge!

You might have played this before, but we’re going to change up the rules.

Inside this ball are notecards with points for your team.

It might be 5 points, 500 points, or negative 200 points – You’ll have to dig in to find out!

When I say go, you’ll start unwrapping.

But, if the person to your left rolls doubles, then you must stop immediately and pass it on to them.

We’ll play until all the treasures are uncovered, and then we’ll add up the points to see which team—boys or girls—won the game. Are you ready?

Play the game as described above.

Play multiple rounds if you have the supplies to do so.

After the game, say: What a fun game! Some of you turned into wild animals as you were trying to uncover those treasures!

You were ripping into that Saran Wrap like there was nothing that could stop you!

Did you notice how the points got bigger and bigger as we got deeper into the layers?

The further you dug into the ball, the more valuable it was for your team.

This principle is also true in our walk with God.

His Word is full of treasure—like wisdom, encouragement, Truth—and the deeper we go into His Word to more valuable it is to us.

Listen to the way David described God’s Word in Psalm 19:7-11. It says,

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

God’s Word is powerful!

These verses say that it revives our soul, makes us wise, gives us joy, opens our eyes, and it will never change!

All of those things make it more valuable than gold or silver!

The Word of God is our treasure, and we should dig deep to discover as much of it as we can!

The say that it takes 21 days for something to become a habit.

So, we want to challenge you to read God’s Word for 21 days and see what treasures you can uncover!

You can start with Psalms or Proverbs, and read one chapter a day.

Ask God to help you understand His Word.

If you have questions about what you’re reading, ask a parent, a friend, or your pastor for their help.

End in prayer.
