Some time ago, while still living in San Diego, I went to a preteen leaders lunch. It’s a group that got together every few months and swapped ideas. Great idea. One of the games we played at one of those meetings was Scatterball. We all played it together, a group of preteen leaders, and it got quite competitive. It was fun. Your preteens will like it too. Enjoy!

Supplies & Prep: Buy the official supplies at www.flaghouse.com/SCATTERBALL-Set-item-14551 or make your own out of cheap colored wristbands at a craft supply place, such as Michael’s. If making a homemade one, make your own numbered cube with 4×4 cardboard box taped with masking tape and various colors (same as wristbands) written with permanent markers on each side of the cube.  The version described here does not require you to have numbers on the cube.

How to Play:  Each player wears a different color wristband.  If you have more than 6 players (you probably will) then evenly distribute various colors of wristbands to each player.  Each colored wristband should match a color on the cube.  Everyone gets in a tight circle as a random player rolls the cube.  Wait till it lands on a color.  The player with a wristband the same color grabs the cube (first one to get it).  All other players run for their lives! The player with the cube cannot move from where it landed and throws it at any player he chooses.  If a player is hit, he gives up his wristband to the player who threw the cube.  If the player catches the cube, the player who threw it gives up his wristband.  Players are out once they have no more wristbands.  If someone has multiple wristbands on and is hit by the cube, he gives them all up.  Continue playing until everyone is eliminated except one player.

Tips:

  • If you have only a few players, then start each player with multiple wristbands of the same color.
  • To make the game last longer, even if you have a large group, give multiple wristbands the same color to each player.
  • If you have more than 20-30 players, then get enough Scatterball supplies to play multiple games at one time in separate groups.
