Turning Point, Part 2
If you haven’t read my previous entry, read it now. This is part 2, where I will finish my thoughts on how January is a turning point in preteen ministry.
Third, preteen guys/girls issues arise. Girls and guys start to “go out” with each other within the group. Be on the look out as it develops. If left unattended, it could create a major distraction. Once identified, help preteens remember the focus of the group is to grow closer to God, not hook up with each other. Put out the fire as soon as possible. Also, use it as an opportunity to discuss healthy guy/girl relationships.
Lastly, start developing leaders with 5th graders. 5th graders make great leaders for several reasons and right now is the best time of the year to develop them. The beginning of school and holidays are over and they are more mature than just a few months ago. If 6th graders are a part of the preteen group, then you have a year and half with them before going to middle school. Pray about who to be a part of the leadership team. Teach them about leadership and give them opportunities to lead.
How you respond to the changing dynamics that the beginning of the year brings is critical. Keep an eye out for them and act accordingly.
