I’ve been guilty in the past of using the “cookie cutter” approach to children’s ministry.  I would go to a conference, read a book or hear a speaker talk about a specific approach to children’s ministry.  Being awe stricken by the number of kids in thier ministry, I would follow exactly what was told.  However, I was short changing what God was uniquely doing in and through me.

When launching a preteen ministry many years ago, I looked around and didn’t see many resources.  So, I had to create my own path making tons of mistakes and some successes along the way.  Through this process, I gained an appreciation of my own uniqueness.  I’ve learned to read books, attend conferences and listen to speakers with a filter.  Chew the meat and spit out the bones is now my motto.

I believe God wants to do the same with you.  He is doing something unique with your preteens, leaders and church.  You have talents and abilities that are different than everyone else.  Learn to filter the many different approaches to preteen ministry.  Listen to God for direction on how to go about reaching the preteens at your church.  I don’t think there is any one way that is most effective, but many ways that are all equally successful.  Be the unique preteen ministry God is wanting to breathe into your community!
